Install guide

Install it in seven steps.

WatchSync isn't on the Chrome Web Store yet, so you load it into your browser yourself. You only do this once. You'll need a computer: WatchSync doesn't run on phones.

Safe to install: the code is public on GitHub, and WatchSync only runs on Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar.

Needs Chrome or Brave on a computer.

v0.1.0 release candidateFree, from our public GitHub

Steps

Your browser

  1. Download the zip

Your browser saves watchsync-extension.zip, usually in your Downloads folder. Downloads come from our public GitHub.

    Download WatchSync

  2. Unzip it, and keep the folder

Chrome can't load a zipped folder, so unzip it first:

    • Windows: right-click the zip, choose Extract All, then Extract.
    • Mac: double-click the zip.
    • Linux: right-click the zip and choose Extract Here.

Move the new watchsync-extension folder somewhere it can stay, like Documents. Chrome loads WatchSync from that folder every time, so don't delete it.

  3. Open the extensions page

Websites aren't allowed to link to this page, so copy the address, paste it into Chrome's address bar and press Enter.

    chrome://extensions
  4. Turn on Developer mode

The switch is at the top right of the extensions page.

It's a standard Chrome setting. WatchSync only runs on Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar, and you can read its code on our public GitHub.

  5. Click Load unpacked

It appears at the top left once Developer mode is on. Choose the watchsync-extension folder, the one with manifest.json directly inside it, and press Select. WatchSync's card appears on the page.

  6. Pin WatchSync

Click the puzzle piece next to the address bar, then the pin beside WatchSync. Its icon stays in your toolbar from now on.

  7. Make or join a room

Click the WatchSync icon and type your name. Press Create a room and send the link, or paste a friend's code and press Join room. Then open the same title on your own account.

If something looks wrong.

"Manifest file is missing or unreadable"

You picked the wrong folder. Choose the folder that directly contains manifest.json. If you see another watchsync-extension folder inside the one you picked, choose that inner one. If you picked the zip file, unzip it first.

A banner about developer-mode extensions

That's expected for an extension you loaded yourself. Close it. If you pressed Disable, turn WatchSync back on with its switch on the extensions page.

WatchSync vanished from the toolbar

You probably moved or deleted the folder. Put it back, or press Load unpacked again and choose it in its new place. Then pin it again.

Getting a new version.

  1. Download the new zip from this site or the release notes and unzip it.
  2. Replace everything inside your WatchSync folder with the new files. Keep the folder where it is.
  3. Open chrome://extensions (or brave://extensions) and press the reload arrow on the WatchSync card.

What WatchSync can see

It sees the clock. Never the picture.

WatchSync only sees whether the video is playing, where it is, and what's on. It doesn't read your passwords or payments, and it can't open other sites: it only runs on Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar pages.

Why Developer mode?

WatchSync isn't on the Chrome Web Store yet, so you load it yourself, and Chrome calls that Developer mode. Chrome then shows a banner about developer-mode extensions. That's expected.

Downloads come from our public GitHub, where you can read every line of the code.
